Yoko B Wang
Yoko is a third year PhD candidate in Neuroscience at The University of Adelaide. She received B.Sc. (Biotechnology) from University of Surabaya in 2016 and was awarded the Australia Awards Scholarships to pursue a postgraduate study in Australia in 2017.
Her current PhD research is focused on understanding the gut-brain axis of appetite control and how this interaction changes in obesity. She is currently investigating the role of different types of sensory vagus nerves (vagal afferents) in the stomach and their interaction with leptin to control appetite. Using combination of approaches at molecular and physiological level, Yoko aims to unravel how leptin acts through vagal afferents in the stomach and why leptin loses its effect in obesity.
Besides fundamental science, Yoko also expands her research area into nutritional epidemiology and public health, where she investigates the association between diet, risk of obesity, and inflammation. She hopes that her research would significantly contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches for obesity through pharmacotherapy or dietary intervention.
Yoko is based at South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and is currently a committee member of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) South Australia. She is also a content creator at Creative Media Team in Indonesian Student Association of South Australia.
Outside of her studies, Yoko is a visual artist and motion graphics enthusiast. She is an avid science communicator.
